SRI LANKAN DESIGN INFLUENCE - tampita vihara

Influenced by the tampita vihara

Sketches made by my team mates.

The Tampita Vihara also known as "Deve Matha Viharaya" has an inimitable architecture design. It is mounted on monolithic pillars or dwarfed rock pillars. The second most distinctive feature of this temple is its exposed columns. Even the form of roof was quite different from the other Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.

The temple has a lot of open space hence it allows people to enjoy the zephyr. It also has crafted railings in earth colours like yellow, red and brown running around the temple. It has been built using stone, clay and wood. The mounting part on the monolithic pillars was famous during the Kandyan era. Even houses in that period had the similar structure. I guess they have used that method to safeguard their buildings during the inundation. I was very much influenced by the design of this building. Especially the way the designer has given importance to the natural light and the ventilation, also at the same time endeavoured to bring the religious effect.
