I figured out that the saree had a long history. It was the traditional dress of the ancient Jain monks.
In those days marriages used be held by the age of 5 and 6. Once if the husband(child) of the girl dies, she would be considered as a widow for the rest of her life and will be asked to wear only white saree.
Bridal wear in my family also has been the saree. I could find small difference in my grandmother's and my mother's bridal look.
